In the Mood for Books
This article is old. But I happened to get a quote from it today, via YIM from Ryan. I got pissed off immediately. Well, I am not here to question Nintendo consoles or if they are a great pass-time or not. But I have to say the author has no idea how a book lover thinks or acts. So he should either pick a lot of books and read them until it feels natural, or simply never touch the subject again.
If you give me a good book and a Nintendo gadget and ask me to pick, I will surely pick the book. No other game playing device will make me change my mood so suddenly as the author states. I won't loose my interest in books just to win some bonus points and extra lives. Not everyone becomes a gamer when a game is in reach. Or they do, for a short while, then it dies out.
I'm on a commenting marathon today. Phew, I'm seriously exhausted.
Comming from an avid 'gamer', I can see the fun in playing games. I am unavoidably attached to my computer. The new games and new graphics make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside =). But in truth, games are games and books are useful.
Dont get me wrong, a couple of hours blowing stuff up in a virtual world can be quite satisfying, but reading a good book in a nice coffee shop is very cool.
Funny, there was an article online some time back about people's lives being ruined by video game addiction, specifically a game called World of Warcraft. Not sure if thats ever been a problem with reading too many books. =)
I don't think too many books can ruin your life, unless you somehow loose contact with reality, but in that case, you're already a bit unstable, so books are still not the cause. But they can ruin your eyes. On the other hand, I do not former fellow faculty colleagues who dropped out because of WoW, Counter Strike, Warcraft, Starcraft etc.
Regarding games, I couldn't exactly call myself a gamer. I do occasionally come across a game that will cause me a couple of sleepless nights, but that happens extremely rare.
As for books, I can't say they can replace video games or vice-versa. If it's a warm and beautiful day outside and I fell like going in a park and find no one to join me, you will most definitely see me accompanied by a book, not a portable console. But if I'm on a journey by train and the tracks are bumpy (Yes, they can be! Those who don't believe me, come to beautiful Romania:) ) or there is a lot of noise or I am tired, you will definitely see me playing something. If it's an arcade or a strategy or brain game depends on the level of noise and tiredness. Other than that, I for one would still go for a book.
Oh, for the non-Romanian speakers, the quote that I gave Kayla and aggravated her off can be translated like this (end of last paragraph on page 1): "It [Nintendo DS] is the perfect gadget on a journey where your only alternative for fun is a book. I'm not saying that this classic method of spending time is not interesting, but when you have such a toy at hand you loose interest in reading."
Fyurien, reading a good book in a nice coffee shop is a sinful pleasure at times :P
Ryan, I guess games to a better job at ruining your eyes :P
Anyway, everyone in my office (developers and testers) are WoW addicted. They are part of this WoW group and all...It is the main topic they talk about, sometimes the only one. I think some occasional books would do good.
