Facebook and MySpace fighting over territory
Facebook, the Internet’s second-largest social network, was originally popular on college campuses, but over the last year it has opened its dorm-room doors to all, and its membership rolls have exploded at triple-digit growth rates.
Now Facebook, based in Palo Alto, Calif., is inviting thousands of technology companies and programmers to contribute features to its service. They can even make money from the site’s users by doing so, and, at least for now, Facebook will not take a cut.
The move could foster some of the chaotic creativity that is more closely associated with MySpace, its larger competitor. It could also open the door to hazards like spam, and make Facebook’s identity less clear.
I think I have created an account on Facebook at a certain point. I have never used it since. For some reason, Facebook and MySpace both fail in convincing me. I am surely out of their target audience. Does any of you use either one? Why/Why not? And which do you consider better?
I have accounts on both, but never use either service. It's just not "me" for some reason.
I'm not particularly into chatting online, and I already have a blog in another space. I also have little interest in people browsing my profile that are just interested in "hooking up", which is the impression, correct or not, that I get from a lot of the users on these sites.
I'm on the computer so much that at the end of the day I don't really want to use it to socialize...
But apparently I'm in the minority, as these sites are really popular with lots of people that I know.
I know what you mean,I have the same impression, it's all about hooking up. My blog is enough for now, but it's interesting to see how it's all turning into a fight over territory.
I use Facebook to communicate with freinds from work it seems like fun I just used it recently but it seems that people are familair with it for a while now...
As for my space I never was a fan I just do not feel it.. I guess it is just me
Hey there! I'm a huge myspace advocate. I used to be a hater, but then a few of my friends got it, and so I jumped on the band wagon and it's been really awesome so far. I've never used it as a "hookup" method, but it has been instrumental in allowing me to find friends/family/colleauges I otherwise would have probably never seen again, in addition to keeping in constant contact with my already close friends. It's really sweet to see what people have been up to all these years and reconnect with them. The only thing I don't like about it, is that it is exclusive in the fact that you have to be a member to comment blogs/pics or view certain features of a profile--but that could also be good, too. :)
he he... the fight of the giants... funny. I don't use them, and I don't like myspace because of all the predators issues. Anyway it's always interesting to see what happens when online giants find that the world is not big enough... not even online.
I had an account on My space, I used it for a month, then, deleted it. I like to chat with people online through messenger or skype, and when I want to publish my thoughts and articles, I use the Blogspot.
Sarah, I feel the same about myspace, although I might be wrong. As for facebook, I fail to answer the why would I question.
Mandy, thank you for your input. I am sure myspace can be interesting given the right company. Which lacks in my case. So, again, why would I? I would like to share comments and thoughts with some members, of course, but would not want to become a member just for that!
Mig, quite true..no world is ever enough, ant that's quite interesting to watch :)
Ayman, I kind of do the same. Publish on my blog and sometimes also make new friends. And use IM to keep in touch with my friends.
